Mad Men Inspires U.K. Olympics Uniforms . . . for McDonald’s Staff Members

Even U.K. McDonald’s employees are getting special treatment in anticipation of this summer’s Olympic Games in London. The restaurant chain hired British fashion designer Wayne Hemingway to update the uniforms of its staff, from unflattering brown polo shirts to arguably even more unflattering polo shirts in mustard and “gherkin”-green shades. In what could be an attempt to make this transformation into sickly condiment-colored tops seem sexier, the chain has announced that the style was inspired by Mad Men. (A quick glance of the promotional photo above reveals a uniform that Megan Draper would not touch, even if she were playing an overworked fast-food employee in an Off Off Broadway production or sadly starring in a McDonald’s commercial produced by Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.) In addition to the aforementioned shirts, male managers will be outfitted in skinny ties while female managers will wear pencil skirts. Additionally, baseball hats have been switched out for tighter-fitting “jockey caps” with smaller peaks. The uniform will premiere at the four McDonald’s locations on the Olympics site before being distributed to all McDonald’s workers in the U.K. In the press release, the vice president of U.K. McDonald’s, who is probably not required to wear a gherkin-green polo, boasted, “If you look good and feel good you will be happier at work and do your job better.” If only McDonald’s had the budget to hire Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant for the sartorial update . . . can you imagine the silk-chiffon batwinged dreses and Vivier flats behind the deep fryer?
